Turn Resolutions Into Results - Be the 8%

Updated: Feb 21, 2020

Making habit changes for your health is hard and few people figure it out.

More than ever people want to win - they want to be that 8% of people who not only stick with their resolutions but also reach the goals they set. With social media being so as it is, we see people all day long who actually are meeting and surpassing goals they set. Some of these people actually accomplish goals that we would like to achieve.

You can make habit changes that will uplevel your health. It doesn’t have to be hard. With the right strategies in place and the right support you can win every time you set a goal.

Why then, is it so damn hard? Right?!! You must have asked yourself that same thing? I certainly have.

Here’s the thing… given the choice I think most people would want to be in the top 8%. I think that if you are here you do want to be in the 8%. And that is one of the reasons why you make those resolutions year after year. It’s the reason why your friends and loved ones do the same. This simple piece of the puzzle could, if well planned, be the catalyst that has you follow through in a big way. Let me backup for a moment. When we talk about New Year’s Resolutions really what we are talking about is doing what you say you are going to do. I am talking about following through on the actions you set out for yourself and keeping your promises.

When the Statistics Prove That You Won’t Follow Through, How do You Win, Anyway?

I, like you, have heard the statistics. Each year someone posts them and each year the numbers are always about the same. The odds are never in our favour, for general goal setting, let alone for New Year’s Resolutions.

There are studies that have shown that less than 25% of people actually stay committed to their resolutions after just 30 days. 30 days… sheesh.. That is kinda gloomy. To top that off, only 8% of people actually accomplish their goals… 8%. Good grief! What that means is that by the third week in January, statistically, many of you are are ready to give up. What about those of you who have already given up? Oh please don’t give up. Now don’t start hiding... come on back here… have a seat, and let’s just chat about this for a moment. This is just me talking with you, dear friend. I care about you and want you to be successful.

I want you to win.

Here’s the thing...all is not lost. Yes, even this late into January.

I promise I am here today to help you be that 8%.

Let’s start with what you promised yourself you would do… go on give yourself a moment to remember what that was. Make a list if you have to. What's on that? Is it to start to exercise more, to begin to save more money, organize your closets…to learn a new language… to finally kick your sugar habit? Was it to eat healthier… to lose weight?

That list can be long and unachievable for most. And so the solutions need to be very focused and intentional.

You can do it. I can help.

What if I could help you continue to follow through for yourself, or to get back on track with the promises you made to yourself? What if I promise it will even be fun and easy?

Let's get started.

What will make this time different?

There is nothing like accomplishing even the smallest task, and feeling like you created this success for yourself. What if you could feel that on the daily, as you wrap up each day, with several wins under your belt? Let’s have a check in.

Are you ready to make the changes this year… or do you want to settle for the status quo.. again?

Do you like to be the model for those around you… or do you like to blend into the back ground?

Do you want to apologetically be your best you and show others that they can make changes for themselves, too (even if they don’t realize it yet)... or do you want to be a spectator and deny to acknowledge the greatness you know is inside you?

Do you want to set whatever goals you have for yourself, when you want.. Or do you want to be restricted to how much you allow yourself to shine and to feel fabulous?

My guess is that you are a winner, a leader.

Heck, you’re a champion, a woman who wants to feel fabulous. I bet you do want to create greater impact in your life. You have people around you whom you want to bless and be a blessing to (even those people you haven’t met yet).

You are tired of playing by the same old rules, never knowing when you will have the changes you so desperately want. Somewhere deep inside you is a desire to win, to be the person you know you are.

But make no mistake, you have tired to keep this in mind other year’s when you have set out to make resolutions. I don’t want you going into this new year with a heavy weight on your shoulders of unmet esolutions. This just leads to burnout, to feelings of defeat even before you get started.

Time to be smart and intentional about your strategy. I can promise you, there is a better way than drowning in feelings of self-pity and frustration.

How Can You Get Excited When All You Can Think About is the Deprivation You ‘Know’ is About to Come?

Maybe you’re wondering, with the feeling of gloom and deprivation creeping up at just the thought of setting resolutions, should you even bother? YES!!

Your goal is only as big as the obstacle that stops you.

How many times have you heard that one? So maybe you’re thinking that this ‘deprivation’ detail is actually a big detail. To continue with this plan, when each day and even several times a day you are feeling deprived, won’t be fun and so not a plan that you could even imagine sticking to. So, what does that say about deprivation being too big of an obstacle? What about if we change that belief? What if it is just a belief because you are choosing to believe it? What if you decided to include in your plan some fun, some goodness for you to enjoy during the process? What if you didn’t feel deprived?

You get to choose how you engage with this process.

When you start with just one goal, and then get crystal clear on what having that goal will feel like, then you come up with very specific steps as part of your plan and you need to be on top of this in order to be headed for the for that 8% Club.

I knew when I started with my workouts I wasn’t sure I would be able to continue, I knew I needed a plan and someone to check in with. I needed a community where people would ‘get me’, and understand what I was going through, believed in me and wouldn’t let me off the hook when I had failed to follow through. I found a group that encouraged me and after I gained a foothold on this follow-thru thing, I created my own community so that I could help others do the same. The Happy, Healthy, and Energized Woman is where you will find me and other like-minded women encouraging others to win!

Just Get Started

Maybe you have been thinking that this year you actually want to do it ‘right’, but you don’t know where to begin… or you’re not sure you really could follow through. I get it.

For years, in fact most of my adult life, I refused to buy-in to the setting of goals, or resolutions. But watching others create these epic results for themselves I just knew there had to be a way for me to have the success I was seeing. I wanted to set a goal and achieve it. It seemed so straight forward.

If you’re like I was, you’ve probably …

been trying #allthethings to get your health on track,

Buying books and stacking them on your bedside table with hopes of starting that reading program.

Wondering how to stay on track with that language course you just signed up for but haven’t even cracked a book - or opened the dashboard.

Maybe you’re doubtful and you carry around so much self-doubt about what you can accomplish...

Or you have been waiting for clarity on the perfect time to start...

Or you aren’t sure how to nail down just the perfect steps to get started...

But girl, let me tell you that all of that will come when you just start here at the beginning and decide to focus on one important step.

When I finally bit the bullet and decided to just start I did a boatload of research on the coaches to make sure I was equipped from the get go. (Not just going it alone.) I’d seen so many people start resolutions only to stop, and I wanted to find a way to ensure that I followed through and finally had the success I knew I could have. In the last 2.5 years my biggest win has been those daily workouts. I feel so much better, my body is stronger, my balance is better, my confidence in myself is more fortified than it has ever been. I am finding myself making strides in small habits without giving them much thought. The habit for getting started and sticking to them is getting stronger and stronger, too.

They say misery likes company, well so does success. I now have a circle of friends around me who get me, who have also stuck to at least one big goal.

The perfect time to tackle those New Year’s Resolutions is NOW.

Going for the goals you set for yourself is the way to achieve success. You see it everyday how people are winning life and becoming more of who they want to be.

So you're ready ...

To make those habit changes that will have a profound impact on your health...

To finally feel better

BUT let’s be honest.

You are tired of working so hard to just make changes stick only to find that they don’t.

You don’t want to feel restricted or deprived because that’s just not gonna work.

You’re kinda fearful about getting started in case this ends with you throwing in the towel frustration… again!

I get it. I felt that way, too, and after helping many women kick sugar, eat better, find the foods that are best for them, I know this…

Deep down you want this more than anything, even if you question it at times.

You know in your heart that you’re here to create an impact and you want to feel your best so you can make that impact.

And you don’t want to feel deprived or restricted, like you are on a diet that leaves you exhausted and frustrated on the verge of caving to every craving that comes along.

You can do it, with the right support, the right system, the right support, and the right accountability that will ensure your inevitable success

But you want THIS. You want to accomplish the desires that you are so passionate about it, that you feel in every cell of your body. Your goals are in the bag.

A flow in your life that feels free of the pressure that you usually feel when you are working on something that means so much to you. The freedom to enjoy your life, the food you are eating, and time with friends without worrying about feeling alone in your mission to your best health.

BUT you’ve probably fallen into the emotional rollercoaster of believing the research and are scared that you will fail. Does that sound familiar?

“The statistics on how many people actually follow through and accomplish their New Year’s resolutions are rather grim. Studies have shown that less than 25% of people actually stay committed to their resolutions after just 30 days, and only 8% accomplish them. Don’t be part of that statistic. This year, set goals instead of resolutions.

Forbes 2018

I’ve been through peaks and valleys. I went all in only to give up a few weeks later and a morning workout habit I started in July 2017 is still a habit I have today.

And, well… I have had results pretty much of everything in between.

Maybe you’re thinking, this feels like so much work, is there a point of even getting started.

Yes!

What can I tell you is that a coach and a community is the key to a successful year of change.

And having a plan and following it has been one thing that has allowed me to create habits that stick and skyrocket the results from embarrassing no results to ‘I’m so happy I did this” successes.

Check this out…

My workout routine in

2010 - 2017 July 2017

No workouts, not even the occasional 15 - 20 minutes HIIT workouts,

walk around the block because that 5 mornings a week, every week

seemed too much. Wowers, right?!

The best part is, you don’t need to have it all figured out.

And you don’t need to be concerned about feeling deprived and restricted.

What you need to do is to get started?

Commitment and readiness to show up in a bigger way and take one step at a time.

So if you’re ready to have more energy, to gain more confidence in your ability to do what you say you are going to do, so you can feel your best, look your best and spend less time worrying about what you are not accomplishing and more time in those things that matter most, then I want to get you started. Taking those first steps to set the stage for you to finally show that you are serious about where your health is.

Ok, let’s dive in

Choose One (or Two) Goals you Want to Achieve.

Before you can begin to know what to do, you have to know just where you are starting from. Think of one (maybe two) things you want to change, or uplevel in your life.

Having one goal allows you to have laser focus.

Changes in one area of your life acts like a springboard for any changes you will make in the future. So, yes those small changes, even in one area of your life, can and will make a big impact in other areas. YAY!... for making next year’s resolutions just a whole lot easier.

To get you started in finding your community of lovelies who will support you come on over to my group The Happy, Healthy, and Energized Woman. You will be glad you did.

These Success Steps Will Ensure you WIN:

Success Step #1 - Get Clear

Success Step #2 - The Plan

Success Step #3 - Prepare for Self-sabotage

Success Step #4 - Buddy up

Success Step #5 - Tie New Habit to an Existing One

Success Step #6 - Focus on the Wins

Success Step #1 - Get Clear

For starters, any and all of those resolutions, I listed above, are great. They are just not specific enough. You have heard it before that you must have a vision for your life. The same applies for your goal setting, for your resolutions. You need to have a clear vision for that as well. If you are not able to see your end goal clearly - like crystal clear, you will struggle with the follow through… EVERYTIME.

Here are a few ways to narrow your vision down and make follow through inevitable:

Say you started with wanting to ‘read more’ you could define that by choosing to read one book each month or if that is too daunting then how about pick three books you want to read this year and start there.

You want to exercise more - how about change that to walk 15 minutes 3 times a week, or 5 times a week.

You eat better - how about you decide to include protein at each meal… or one piece of produce at each meal.

That new language you wanted to learn - how about start with an short, introductory, online course in French.

Go ahead, go all out here… draw from that place inside where all your feels come from.

Put your mind to thinking about what is the result or outcome you want. What will coming home from that first short walk - or run feel like? This is where you need to keep walking into that. Don’t just think about it - feel it. Feel that result. Ok, now we’re talking. How does that feel?

Get out a paper and pen and start writing, write about all of it. What that will feel like describe it as many ways as you need to create all these feelings.

When you are excited about the result then you are getting to that clarity.

Success Step #2 - Create a Plan

This is where it gets fun. This step is so much easier once you have done the work getting clear.

This is where you put in the small, achievable steps that you can do, the steps you can make a habit so that the bigger goal just happens. Let’s use the goal to exercise more, and now you know you want to walk 15 minutes, 3 times each week. So now you look at your schedule and decide what days this will happen. Will it happen Mon, Tue and Friday at your lunch. Will you walk before you go to work or start your day? Will you hop out of bed and immediately put on your workout clothes?

The steps you come up with need to feel light, not ominous, not heavy and especially NOT RESTRICTIVE. So… what feels right for you? You get to pick.

YAY… to you being in charge here!

Success Step #3 - Prepare for Self-sabotage and come out the victor

This one is a biggie. Your subconscious brain does not want to change. Period! Your brain would rather do anything but change. I talk about love, safety and belonging, at all costs, your brain will ensure that these three remain intact - even if means sabotaging your efforts at a new habit that will have you feeling better, more energized and eating better.

Every single time I have coached someone there has been an element of self-sabotage. Every single time. Dear Friend, is that you need to have this as part of your plan for success. Getting back up after the ‘fall’ will have a resounding ripple on your success. Your success will mean more and be more of a win because you did decide to get back up.

While you are thinking through your plan you will also come up with a list of things that will stop you or get in the way of your success.

Success Step #4 - Buddy up

If you have an accountability partner, you're 65% more likely to complete a task and you'll increase your chances of success by up to 95%, according to a study done by The American Society of Training and Development (ASTD)

Remember that person that you shared your win with, the one who you know will have your back? Well that person could be a bigger piece to your success than, perhaps, originally you thought.

If you are scratching your head, just now, wondering how to find the right person, or who to use for this role, consider:

* a health coach

* a life coach

* a trusted friend

* a fitness instructor

* someone from your running group or your entire running group,

This person will offer you a different perspective in those moments when you are challenged or experience a dip in your willpower.

Success Step #5 - Tie New Habit to an Existing One

This step is easy. When you are working on creating another habit, you need to replace it with another one. To make this process easy-peasy you will want to pair this new habit with an existing one. So, say you want to increase the amount of water you drink in a day. Think about habits that you could incorporate this new habit into.

Here’s my routine to help you figure out a plan for you. Before bed, I fill up a large glass of water and put it on the counter just outside the bathroom. In the morning as I am getting ready I have already have a glass ready to drink. By the time I am done with my hair and makeup I have had 16oz of water. Then while I am getting the girls their breakfast I drink 16oz more, so 32oz of water by breakfast.

Success Step #6 - Focus on the Wins

When you are making changes to your lifestyle and taking action steps towards achieving your goals, it can be easy to slip up along the way. Maybe you fall off the wagon and take a cheat day from your diet, maybe you forget to read your books on the weekend or you miss a day of marathon training. There is one thing I know about going about making changes to any area of our lives:

We will feel frustrated - “Sheesh, will it (I) always be this way?

And on an on the internal conversation goes. I have heard people say that this form of self-talk gets us nowhere. The thing is, I disagree. It does get us somewhere, just not where we want to get to. It gets us deeper in our pit. Sometimes that pit feels safe. It keeps us hiding, and in inaction.

So, this is the new practice - the one that will keep the pity party away.

Encourage yourself - Instead of beating yourself up with,” Why can’t I just have the willpower I need?” “Why do I keep failing?” try using conversations such as,”I didn’t reach my goal today but I’ll work towards it again tomorrow.” or “Hey, I had a great breakfast and a great lunch, it was just dinner that I wish I had planned better. Tomorrow I will have a plan.”

Give yourself a chance - Choose this for yourself. You are the one who can do this. Let yourself know that you can be counted on.

Celebrate - Remind yourself of the positive steps that you have taken. Rather than getting caught up in a hopeless cycle of putting yourself down or feeling like a lost cause. Nothing good ever comes from the latter. Nothing! Allow yourself to celebrate your progress and focus on your wins. What would this celebration look like - it can be a happy dance. Yes, actually get up off your duff and dance. Put on your favourite song and dance it out. It could be telling a friend, one who you know has your back. And it could just been saying to yourself,” I knew you were a winner.” “I knew you could do it.” “There I just proved that I can do this!”

Not Ready to Get Started on Your Own? Not Sure You Can Do This?

I know you want the change, I know that you are counting on you and you know that others are counting on you… even if they don’t say it. For so many years, I was not that active mom that I wanted to be. I was a really bad example of fitness and never taught my boys how to care for their health. With my new commitment of working out, and then more importantly, with my actual follow through, I have been able to be that mom for my children.

You might say that my health benefits would be the first and biggest of these benefits. While these were significant and still are today, with me gaining strength and muscle all the time. The most significant win for me is the confidence that I have about my ability to accomplish the things I set out to. You see I was also coming from a sugar addiction and so that was a big part of my health challenges. My brain was crazy, my energy was in the tank and my cravings were big and taking over all the things I did. For those of you who have this struggle I have created this FREEBIE for you to get yourself started:

Grab my 10 Ways to Curb Your Cravings freebie right here.

Just imagine the day when sugar doesn’t take over every thought you have...

You are getting up in the morning, getting your workout gear on, putting on your favourite music and thrilled that you have this energy. * You have grabbed a big glass of water and getting your workout done, breaking a sweat and loving how you feel.

* You are thinking about your first meal, it’s a high-protein, lots of veggie meal. You feel happy just thinking about it.

* You are feeling confident in yourself as you are eating healthier and healthier all the time.

* You are enjoying the foods you are eating and as for those cravings, well they have just gone away.

Here you are celebrating and standing confidently in knowing ‘you did it!”

You realize to yourself, it wasn’t that hard.

You get a chance to sit back, take a deep breath and savour the milestone. Everything just feels a little lighter and a little easier. You’re ready to be that model for your family.

Hugs. You are worth it.
